Iowa Teen Died of Malnutrition

Following the May death of a 16-year-old Iowa girl who weighed just 56 pounds when she died of malnutrition, five people have been arrested including the girl’s adoptive parents, brother, and grandmother, PEOPLE confirms.

Court records obtained by PEOPLE paint a harrowing portrait of the last month of Sabrina Lynn Ray’s life.

An affidavit from Perry Police alleges Sabrina “suffered unreasonable force, torture and cruelty for an extended period of time, resulting in bodily injury … that was intended to cause serious injury.”

On Wednesday, Perry police announced the arrests of Sabrina’s adoptive brother, 21-year-old Justin Dale Ray, and her 62-year-old adoptive grandmother, Carla Raye Bousman. Court records allege that about a month before she died, Sabrina was “drop-kicked” by Ray, and thrust down a basement staircase, rendering her unable to walk, talk, eat, or drink.

Records indicate that Sabrina, who died from “severe malnutrition,” was one of three girls adopted out of foster care and living with Marc and Misty Ray, who were arrested days after she died. The affidavit alleges all three girls were regularly denied food and water, and that they also suffered continual physical abuse at the hands of their adoptive family.

The Rays each face four counts of child endangerment resulting in serious injury, one count of child endangerment resulting in bodily injury, and three counts of neglect or abandonment of a dependent person. They have pleaded not guilty to the charges. The couple are being held on $1 million bail.

Marc and Misty Ray, who ran a daycare center out of their Perry home, were vacationing in Florida when Sabrina’s lifeless body was discovered.

Police allege that during this period, the girl was left in the care of her adoptive brother, who faces one count of child endangerment resulting in serious injury, one count of child endangerment resulting in bodily injury, and two counts of willful injury causing bodily.

He has not entered pleas to the charges against him and remains in custody without bail.

Court records accuse Bousman, the grandmother, of assisting in kidnapping and torturing Sabrina and the other two girls. She also allegedly assisted in trying to cover up Sabrina’s death and injuries the other girls had sustained.

Bousman has been charged with three counts of aiding and abetting kidnapping, one count of aiding and abetting child endangerment resulting in death and obstructing prosecution or defense for allegedly tampering with evidence at the crime scene and providing detectives with false information.

She has yet to enter a plea and is still being held without bail.

A woman described in court documents as a “niece” — Josie Raye Bousman, 20 — has been charged with one count of child endangerment resulting in death and three counts of first-degree kidnapping. She allegedly told investigators she helped abuse Sabrina. Josie has not appeared in court to plea to the charges.

Lawyers for all five defendants could not be reached for comment.

The other two girls are being placed with different families and will recover from their alleged maltreatment, police records state.
