Mackie left college prematurely in order to on his first job as a sketch artist at Paramount Studios. In 1961, he was encountered by the award-winning costume designer Edith Head. He continued to work at Paramount under Ray Aghayan, designer and soon to be a life partner, as a novice designer. After a while, he started working as a sketch artist for Jean Louis, a French Haute couturier. By 1969, he started designing costumes for Diana Ross, The Supremes, and The Temptations in the television special “GIT: On Broadway”.

He has continued working with Diana Ross and many other notable personalities since then. Through these works, he has managed to garner several awards and prominence throughout the years. Many of his design drawings are featured in the “Showgirls” collection from UNLV Libraries Digital Collections. Most notably, he created costumes for Cher’s 2008–11 Las Vegas Cher at the Colosseum residency at Caesars Palace, as well as for her 2017 “Classic Cher” shows in Las Vegas and Washington D.C.

Also, he is well-known for designing the “curtain dress” that Carol Burnette wore at The Carol Burnette Show episode named “Went With The Wind”. In addition, he also dressed Cher for the 1986 Academy Awards. He dressed her in black stretch pants, a bejeweled loincloth, knee-high boots, a black chainlink top, and a huge feathered Mohawk headdress that was one and a half times taller than her head. He also was the designer for Whitney Houston’s splashy evening gowns that she wore through many concerts and award shows.
