A young boy was reportedly beaten to death by his mother’s ex-boyfriend as he tried to protect his younger sister from being molested.

Police in California have said eight-year-old Dante Daniels was attacked with a hammer by 23-year-old Deandre Chaney Jnr in the early hours of September 1.

A criminal report claims that Chaney Jnr was engaged in the crime of committing a lewd act on Dante's seven-year-old sister, KFVS has reported.

Dante’s grieving grandmother, Monique Brown, said the young boy was trying to save his sister when he was attacked by Chaney Jnr.

It has also been alleged that at some point, Chaney Jnr used lighter fluid and a knife on Dante's sister and mother as well.

Dante was left brain dead following the attack and he died six days after.

His sister and his mother, Elizabeth Stone, both survived the attack.

Chaney Jr. is facing murder and attempted murder charges along with a charge of lewd acts with a child under 14.

In response, a GoFundMe page has been set up to help the family pay for medical bills and recovery.

So far more than £11,000 ($16,000) has been raised.
